“Soldier”, Hy Snell (Ammerican 1918-2017). $500

“Soldier”, Hy Snell (Ammerican 1918-2017)

Almost Brutalist in concept this composition of hybrid metal scraps conveys the roughness of military life.

A framed mixed metal sculpture created by sculptor/painter Hyman "Hy" Snell that is believed to date to the late 1950's / early 1960's. The sculpture is of a man holding what appears to be a rifle. The piece was created of bits of scrap metal and old printing plates welded and soldered together and mounted to a plastered wooden board. $500.00

The artist was a native of Bronx, NY where he was a department store display artist for decades. While living there he would visit local junkyards and collect scrap metal fragments to create his sculptural works. Later in life he became almost blind and continued painting well into his nineties.
