I found this crumpled flag on the grave of my uncle, an Air Force pilot who was killed in World War II. I carry his name. And thus began this painting. From that terrible day on September 11th to its ugly aftermath; from young men sent off to war once again; from mistaken martyrdom to politicians’ incompetence; from boys becoming child soldiers and forever losing their childhood and often, their lives; to the tragedy of the tsunami and the genocide of Darfur ignored by America and the world.
My hope and intent is that you, the viewer, will examine all that is happening in the world today and feel the need to help repair the world. This poem by Sarah Teasdale, which I have used throughout the painting, expresses the hopelessness we must overcome:
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound.
