I had submitted this piece for a critique. As the comments were given, one particular male viewer stated that he had dabbled in “homoerotica”, too. I pondered this statement for no more than a minute and asked him what was “homoerotic” about it. What made this “homoerotic”? the image is of a singular figure. Is it the fact that I’m a male artist painting a shirtless male figure or the fact that he was aroused by looking at it? Could a female look upon this painting with pleasure? Could a heterosexual male see this image as beautiful? Why does a figure need to be sexualized? Why do we feel the need to slap a label on anything? My questions were never answered.
